The robber, who wasn't interested in any sweet treats, committed the robberies in the early morning hours at donut shops along Mammoth Road (Route 128) in Massachusetts and New Hampshire beginning before 6 a.m., Friday, June 3.
Police were able to get a description of the vehicle used by the suspect, described as a red Toyota Camry, said Capt. Bryan Smith, of the Windham Police Department in New Hampshire.
In one incident, the robber, described as a white male wearing a mask, approached the drive-thru window and grabbed the tip jar and a short struggle ensued for control of the jar, police said.
The suspect was able to take the jar and fled the area in the red Toyota Camry.
Windham officers spotted the vehicle on Mammoth Road, but it outran them and got away, Smith said.
While conducting a search of the area for the vehicle officers were advised that another robbery had occurred at Honey Dew Donuts on Route 128, the captain said.
The suspect matches the description of the person in the earlier robberies, including unnamed shops in Massachusetts, he added.
For those that don't know, National Donut Day was started in 1838 by the Salvation Army in Chicago as a way to honor the women called "Doughnut Girls," who delivered tasty treats to troops during World War 1.
As a way to keep the tradition alive, most donut shops continue to give away a free donut -- some require a drink purchase -- to those looking for a sweet fix.
